Smartt Karoo Organic was Founded in February 2017 by Willie and Sonja Esterhuizen, former city dwellers who swopped the hustle of the Mother City for life on their family farm in the heart of the Great Karoo.
Their journey to organic farming started when they realised there was no organic meat available in the South African market - This revelation inspired them.
After many sleepless nights and hard work, SA’s only producers of certified organic meat were born. Their meat has a world-renowned taste, simply because the sheep are born and raised in the Great Karoo.
A Sheep starts to lose its teeth at 15 months – once this happens they are no longer classified as 'lambs'. As soon as they get two real teeth, they are classified as AB Grade Mutton (they have two teeth for about 4 months)
So AB Grade is never more than 4 months older than their 'lamb' counterparts. We are stocking AB Mutton, not Lamb. The meat is tender because it matures for 7 days, the chops are bigger and the meat has a lot more flavour as the sheep have spent more time on the Karoo vegetation!
The meat is certified according to internationally recognised Ecocert Organic Standard (recognized as equivalent to the provisions of regulation of the European Union (EC) No 834/2007).
